Three papers detailing research by recent Sewanee science majors have been published.

Biology Senior Honors Theses were presented by graduating seniors, Michelle Ghandi and Keri Bryan Monday, April 30th in Spencer Hall.

Several biology, ecology & biodiversity and biochemistry majors participated along with students from various departments in the annual Scholarship Sewanee celebration.

Stephanie Loria (C’11, Environmental Studies: Ecology and Biodiversity) was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. This prestigious award supports three years of graduate research. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program began in 1952; former recipients include 30 Nobel laureates and 440 members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Professor of Biology David Haskell is receiving accolades for his new book, "The Forest Unseen: A Year's Watch in Nature." Haskell is reading from the book and speaking to audiences across the country this spring.

Bert Harris, class of 2006 (ecology-biodiversity major) presented a lecture on "The effects of climate change on birds across Wallace's Line" on Monday, February 21st.

Ecology and Biodiversity seniors Keri Bryan and Katie Qualls were presented with the 2011-2012 Harry C. Yeatman Award in Biology at the annual Department Junior-Senior Event on October 2nd.

Nancy Berner, William Henderson Professor of Biology, has been awarded a major grant from the National Science Foundation in support of her research into the mechanisms controlling thermal acclimation in the Eastern red spotted newt. The grant will provide $400,000 in funding over the next four years.

Biology alum Groves Dixon recently published his honors research on cave-obligate species in the Southeastern Naturalist journal.

Stephanie Loria ('11) presented her honors research at the Annual Meeting of the American Arachnological Society.

Biology Capstone presentations were given by seniors Nathan Bourne, Will Cowan and Sierra Hayes Tuesday, May 10th in Spencer Hall.

Dr. David Johnson presented a seminar entitled "Human activities and trophic interactions: tales from a salt marsh."
